So, is there any other manga out there where the manga having a mini-comic detailing the mangaka’s search for information about how Japanese women in the 1860s dealt with their menstrual cycle is actually very important and a central plot point?

I have to say, as fond as I am of the manga itself, my favorite part of each volume is getting to the “Kaze Hikaru” diary at the back, where the mangaka talks about research and how hard she tries to get the historical stuff as right as is humanly possible, only to always learn that she had something off.

This series is doing what other series about the Shinsengumi, as much as I’ve enjoyed them, hasn’t: it’s making me want to research the Shinsengumi. But I shall resist this urge. I already know enough to know it’ll likely end up depressing me about what’s coming.

This volume was much smoother for me than the first.
